An Open Letter to Premier McGuinty:

Balance the Books - or Sell Out Ontario's Future

Toronto: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today sent a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty, asking that the premier keep his promise to deliver a balanced budget by the end of his first term in office.

"Recent comments made by the premier indicate he will not keep his promise to balance the province's books by 2007. He has already broken his signed promise to not run deficits during his first term, which will end up costing Ontario taxpayers an extra $4 billion in interest payments alone," said CTF Ontario Tasha Kheiriddin. "Yet at the same time, he is promising new provincial spending on everything from casinos, to daycare, to education. This threatens to drag Ontario down the same deficit-strewn road that former premier Bob Rae did in the early 1990's - with terrible consequences for Ontario's economy."

The CTF is Canada's largest taxpayer research and advocacy organization with over 68,000 supporters. Established in 1990, it is a federally incorporated not-for-profit, non-partisan, organization. The CTF is dedicated to lower taxes, less waste, and more accountable government.
